Should be done for the next version. It's confusing to have xml errors after upgrading to Spring 4 and no information in the documentation what happened to idref/ local.

In fact, 'idref' is still available and checked against actually registered bean names at runtime. We're turning it into a RuntimeBeanNameReference in Spring's model, whereas a standard 'ref' gets turned into a RuntimeBeanReference.

As for the 'local' attribute, I've added the following note to the ref docs:

The local attribute on the ref element is no longer supported in the 4.0 beans xsd since it does not provide value over a regular bean reference anymore. Simply change your existing ref local references to ref bean when upgrading to the 4.0 schema.
