Personally, I think compare function can be shortened so it does not introduce unnecessary overhead, to:

public func <(lhs: NSDate, rhs: NSDate) -> Bool {
    return lhs.timeIntervalSinceReferenceDate < rhs.timeIntervalSinceReferenceDate
}

Use timeIntervalSinceReferenceDate property directly instead of storing it in a local variable first
