My proposal for this issue is to support initially Smile (binary JSON) and CBOR data formats, since they seems mature and conceptually quite close to JSON (schema less). I implemented such support in this branch if you want to review it.

Avro support seems not mature enough + more schema based, and protobuf supports does not depends on the official library, that's why I did not include these for now.

Any thoughts Brian Clozel Juergen Hoeller?

Yes!
In the meantime, protobuf is now 3.0 GA, so this is still the best option in my opinion for protobuf support.
Now I also agree with your choice of supported formats - schema-less, close to JSON seems to be a good compromise.
