This is now resolved. Effectively, it means @ResponseBody methods can detect requested media types through path extensions or a request parameter among other options. To configure, declare a ContentNegotiationManager bean and use it in the RequestMappingHandlerMapping (for matches via the produces condition), the RequestMappingHandlerAdapter and the ExceptionHandlerExceptionResolver (for writing to the response body).
