RM note: This docs-only fix will need to be backported as far as 3.7 to avoid any future commits/PRs touching the docs erroring out on the docs CIs due to the Pygments issue, as they all pick up the latest version of Pygments. After analyzing several alternatives to solving this, I picked the simplest alternative that involved the minimal changes and only touched lines that haven't been modified in nearly a decade, specifically to make backports as smooth as possible. |

Marking this as draft for the moment, as we may not need to merge this (and then revert it) if Pygments releases the already-merged upstream fix quickly enough; see pygments/pygments#2407 . |
