This is a new much simpler, yet with more features than the existing simulator datastore.
Goal is that this replaces all datastores, maybe with an automatic conversion.
This PR is just the appetizer, it is still not properly integrated...but since the integration will be a temporary solution for v3.x this will be done in a later PR.
