Fix workflows with new versions

Changes:

• Workflow actions version bumps - some older versions are no longer supported on github.
• isort run over python imports to fix linter errors.
• ruff linter issues fixed - functionally not changed.
• Fix trailing whitespace.
• Added .venv to the excluded dirs in the make checks.

Not a request for changes, but if you should happen to find yourself wrestling another half-broken mess of a repository it might save you a minute!

I've put the checks.sh change upstream into pimoroni/boilerplate-python#19. I'll see if there's anything else... :)
