What is a mapcode?

Mapcodes are short, precise and easy to recognise codes that can be used to pinpoint any location on Earth, much like a normal address. Mapcodes are especially useful in areas where no addresses exist, or they are hard to find or incomplete.

You can use this app to find the Mapcode for any location on Earth and to convert between mapcodes, addresses and coordinates.

Unlike other geographic location systems, mapcodes are backed by a non-commercial foundation, with a mission to keep mapcodes free and open-source for anyone to use! Tap 'learn more' below to read more about the Mapcode Foundation's mission.

2. Demonstrate idea of territories

Explain idea of territories. Copy the address and territory UI from the map screen to demonstrate cycling through the territories for a location.

Every mapcode consists of a territory and a code. To keep mapcodes short, many places can have the same code and so the territory says in which country and/or state the code is in. This is the same reason why you put more than just your house number and street on a typical address.

Inside the app you can tap the territory button below to cycle through all the mapcodes for a location. Have a go!

3. Request location permission
This just makes it longer to start using the app and it should be self-explanatory why the app requests for permission when you tap to view your location.

If you want to use this app to find the mapcode for your location then you will need to grant it permission to do so. Tap 'grant permission' below.

Some comments:

• The word mapcode is not capitalized (we explicitly want that, so it becomes a "natural" word).
• "that can be used instead of an "official" address" -> "that can be used to pinpoint any location on Earth, much like a normal address description".
• "In many parts of the world people don't have an address for their home or business so they use Mapcodes to get mail and customers for example." -> Mapcode are especially useful in areas where no addresses exist, or they are hard to find or incomplete.
• "Mapcodes will forever be free..." --> Unlike other geographic location systems, mapcodes are backed by a non-commercial foundation, with a mission to keep mapcodes free and open-source for anyone to use.

On territories:
There are 2 types of mapcodes: international and local mapodes. Local mapcodes are short, often easy to remember codes, that are unique within a specific territory. Territories are usually entire countries, but for some large countries (such as the US and Russia), territories may be states instead. To identify the territory, the mapcode may be preceded by its (ISO) country or state code. Examples are: NLD 49.YV in the Netherlands, or MOZ FW.Z3 in Mozambique.
International mapcodes do not have a territory code and are always 10 characters to make sure they are globally unique, like 8LVCW.L2K9. As international are always the longest, and hardest to use code, it is recommended to local mapcodes, unless the location is outside any territory (e.g. mid-ocean).
If mapcodes are used within a specific country only, for example by its postal system, the territory code may be dropped altogether when communicating mapcodes, as it can easily be inferred, making mapcodes even smaller and easier to use.

I think that is too much text for the territory part. To save a bit of space I don't think the distinction between local and international needs to be written - international is a territory (i.e the Earth). Also the bit about countries and states. The main point to get across is that the concept of territories exist so that (much) shorter mapcodes can be used in a more local context. I think making the comparison with how we shorten normal addresses can make it clearer to some people.

What about...

A mapcode consists of a territory and a code. Every location has multiple codes for each territory that it is in and each code is unique in its territory, for example, San Fransisco has a California, USA, and International code. The international code is unique to the entire world but it is very long and hard to remember. So you are recommended to use the most local mapcode and omit the territory depending on who you are sharing it with. This is the same as normal addresses: you don't put the country when you share your home address with a friend that lives in the same town.
