Regression in handling of `DATE`?

There appears to be a regression in the handling of DATE values:

db-val: 2012-06-14
old-val: 2012-06-14
new-val: 56324-07-06

DATETIME continues to work as expected

edit I new refers to current master, old refers to code.google.com/p/go-mysql-driver/mysql

I did a major rewrite a few days ago, which unfortunately seems to introduced a few bugs.
