What's the benefit here? I don't expect major version zero to be around for too much longer.

To allow people to load 0.2@dev and have composer load the latest 0.2 bleeding edge code. This is much preferable to people putting in dev-master because they want the latest commit.

Roger, so I guess I need to keep on top of it and bump it up accordingly when I, for example, bump to 0.3?

Yes, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if you forgot about it, released 0.3, then changed the alias to 0.3 in a later commit.
