[tests] : Improve test coverage

### Description of bug

Over the last 12 months the test coverage has dropped from approximately 88% to approximately 75% .  The objective of the PR(s) which would solve this issue would be to increase the test coverage so that it is comparable to the level achieved previously, e.g. 85-90 %.
