Description

This PR removes treatPendingAsSignedOut option from useSession hook. The main motivation is to return the session object even if the session is pending, like it's done with useClerk().session context.

It also updates isSignedIn to use Clerk.isSignedIn to consider the pending status as signed-out.

This is not a breaking change since we haven't released the API GA, even tho the option wasn't prefixed with __experimental.

Context

Previously, this option was added to cover scenarios where developers were doing !!session checks for the signed-in state - in fact, some of our docs snippets currently advocate for this.

We recognize those decisions have changed after we introduced this as a default behavior for newer applications. Now it's better to strive for the best DX than backwards compatibility.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes remove the treatPendingAsSignedOut option from the useSession hook in the @clerk/shared package. The hook's signature is updated to be parameterless, eliminating the optional options parameter and related type imports. Corresponding internal logic that previously handled the treatPendingAsSignedOut option and "pending" session status is removed. The determination of the isSignedIn value is now based on clerk.isSignedIn for valid sessions, rather than always returning true. Additionally, the type definition for UseSessionReturn is updated to allow isSignedIn to be a boolean instead of always true when a session is loaded. No other functional or public API changes are made.

Whenever reviewing a pull request, if there are any changes that could impact security, always tag @clerk/security in the PR.

Security-impacting changes include, but are not limited to:

  • Changes to authentication logic or mechanisms (e.g. login, session handling, token issuance)
  • Any modification to access control, authorization checks, or role-based permissions
  • Introduction or modification of hashing algorithms, signature verification, or cryptographic primitives
  • Handling of sensitive data (e.g. passwords, tokens, secrets, PII)
  • Integration with external identity providers (e.g. SSO, OAuth, OpenID Connect)
  • Modifications to security headers, cookie flags, CORS policies, or CSRF protections
  • Bypass mechanisms (e.g. feature flags, testing overrides) that could weaken protections
  • Changes to rate limiting, abuse prevention, or input validation

If you're unsure whether a change is security-relevant, err on the side of caution and tag @clerk/security.

Any time that you tag @clerk/security, please do so explicitly in a code comment, rather than within a collapsed section in a coderabbit comment, such as the "recent review details" section. If you do use the team name in any thinking or non-direct-code-comment content, it can be referred to as "clerk security team" to avoid accidentally printing the tag which sends a notification to the team.

192-196: Confirm type update for UseSessionReturn and document breaking change

The change from

isSignedIn: true

to

isSignedIn: boolean

in the third variant of UseSessionReturn correctly reflects the new dynamic behavior (removal of treatPendingAsSignedOut) while preserving type safety.

Please verify and update the following before merging:

• Migration guide or CHANGELOG entries calling out that isSignedIn can now be false even when session is present
• Examples or documentation (MD/JS-doc) that assumed isSignedIn: true when a session exists
• Communication to consumers about this potentially breaking change

17-17: Update JSDoc documentation to reflect removed parameter.

The JSDoc comment still references an [options] parameter that has been removed from the hook signature.

6-6: LGTM: Hook signature simplification is clean.

The removal of the optional options parameter simplifies the API and aligns with the stated objectives. The parameterless signature is more straightforward for developers.

Also applies to: 58-58

.changeset/orange-eggs-start.md (1)

1-6: LGTM: Changeset accurately documents the changes.

The changeset correctly identifies this as a patch change to @clerk/shared and accurately describes the removal of the treatPendingAsSignedOut option from the useSession hook.
