Cannot deploy to Docker Swarm

Hi,

I am trying to deploy your application in Docker Swarm because I am looking for an alternative to Joplin, and your project looks really promising.

I need to run the application as root, so I followed the build instructions on your site (small note: it might be worth mentioning where the Dockerfile should be created or put), however, Docker Swarm ignores build commands, so it's not doing anything for me.

Would it be possible to create a pre-built root version, or maybe better yet, add a parameter so the UID and GID can be passed using environment variables?

Running any container as root is not safe. If any dependency gets compromised, it can take over the whole container, or worse, if the host is not properly isolated. That's why I prefer to maintain rootless images. I think it's possible to use my images as root, but I never went all the way because it requires some work. I created a discussion related to this topic, and I'm always open to learning different takes on this.

I have never used Docker Swarm, but from what I read:

• You can run rootless containers
• There's no build phase, so the image should be in some registry

So, do you really need to run it as root? Because, if you don't, it should be possible to get it working with just an extra step. The idea would be:

• Build the image with the IDs from your host folders
• Push the image to your registry
• Use your image in the compose.yaml
