Reverts #1937
After a brief discussion, the @OAI/tsc has agreed that merging this PR to v3.0.3 was an error as it changes the behavior of the current version, which we can't do in patch releases.
I'll look to see if I can find a way to reapply the original PR to v3.1.0 (where there's no problem to accept it), and if not, will reach out the OP to resubmit against the right branch.
