I think values can be 0, 1, or 2d.
Looking closer now, Im not sure the behavior when using multiple fields in conjunction with values would work for the dense case (where we dont want to assign the same values to each field.). Will look a little more.

Its not clear to me from initially reading the code whether we are correctly handling the assignment of multiple fields in conjunction with multiple values. We should check the current function and decide whether to restrict usage or implement any patches as needed. (Perhaps I just don't understand what the code is doing and we just need some comments).
