Oregon

• Cassie offered to drop me off wherever & I’m ready for the sun!
• texted my uncle David in Portland & we ate at olympia provisions had a 5 course meal
• I could not decide if that was better than the brunch I had there before my oregon pct hike
• so I’m saying that was my best brunch ever and this was the best dinner lol
• tomorrow we are going to try to hit up the snow peak restaurant that wasn’t open last time
• after that I’m not sure maybe get dropped off at gnat creek campground?
• I don’t feel bad about skipping the WA section because I’ve rode the STP seattle to portland
• plus the WA section isn’t really on the coast much plus this gives me a chance possibly to go east after san diego
• or do WA last when its warmer we’ve had some nights in the 20s and testing my gear in the yard in the 20s was rough lol

north oregon

• I'm writing from a hotel w/ a fireplace and a view of the shore!
• btw: the snow peak restaurant is open and their donburi is amazing we’ll be going back there!
• snow peak has amazing donburi definitely going back
• got paranoid at the first campground road closed due to ongoing vandalism and dangerous strangers stopping by the campsite who came and left suspiciously lol worried for nothing no boogie man showed up
• rained and got down to 38? of course I ditched some supplemental apex insulation mini blankets that make my 48 degree mld bag comfortable below that
• no worries - something to be remedied at the next town
• ride to astoria or was on road hwy 30 & old 30 lots of traffic
• astoria was amazing got some good views and pics will revisit there again someday
• the cheap hotel I was checking out looked like a logistic pita
• continued on some weird side roads with lots of hills - i will be ditching some heavy items as suspected
• good views though and no traffic on the side roads
• arrived at seaside weather is 38 tonight possible rain all week
• wimped out got a cheap hotel not regretting that
• fireplace beach view recharging drying gear warming up eating mexican lol
• found an amazing light alpaca hybrid hood / shawl thingy to add an insulataion layer
• its from ecuadoor well made hand made love it i'll wear this permanently it goes with clothes need to get a pic
• the 41 mile ride has my old butt and legs and arms are sore lol i might take a recovery day because this is so nice...
• considering an alpaca blanket they had too but its a bit heavy so thinking it over
• i really should have just brought my big old sleeping bag not this ul crap which serves me well on the pct but not winter biking!
• what else... downloaded some offlline google maps & checking the route & downloaded the show "safe" to the tablet lol
• so much for being an ourdoorsman this is turning into a bougie trip
• looking forward to warmer hopefully dry campsites ahead hopefully i can avoid hotels
• need to remember to meditate and stop whining and clinging to comfort good grief
• meditation class wednesday thats going to be strange hopefully i can find a suitable place for the zoom meeting
• whining and shivvering aside I'm loving this and very grateful to be outside biking the coast!

middle oregon

• typing from reeds port I wimped out got a hotel its very cold and wet need to dry off
• met cool people at previous campsites hiker biker sites are amazing I prefer that over hotels even
• so hiker biker spots are simple $8 near registration and are usually setup very convenient with lockers and locking charge stations one had a wood platform that was the right size for my hmg ultra mid 2 its nice to be level
• what else… eating delicious food & enjoying local radio
• for a radio i’m using a baofeng w/ extended battery wish it was waterproof i need to find a bag for it I just use an old phone holder on the bar
• all of my gear is pretty tuned in I am still considering mailing some widgets home to save weight
• i brought a couple in town outfits that are heavy but its nice to get comfortable in town
• my body is fine but my legs and butt are a bit sore & I’m not adapted to this cold yet
• I might revisit some of these towns on my return home I know I missed some things + at least one light house
• oh the roads are treacherous at times narrow or no room for a bicycle but the 101 is marked a bike route so people need to chill most give me planets of room I’m glad I have a rear mirror mounted on my glasses
• only one trucker was exhibiting small dick behavior and honked for no reason but he gave me space so I didn’t bother giving him the usual double middle finger lol
• some off-road vehicles honk exuberantly at me they’re bikers or adventurers
• k I’m off to review tomorrows route and dry off my clothes

• I was at the camp north of here at 5am sounded like a cat screaming bloody murder not sure what happened
• in the morning it was not raining :) when breaking camp a black squirrel was clearly displeased dropping pinecones on me for a minute till I talked to him then we made peace lol
• not far south I had a loud tire blow out rear tire on the bead I thought I was in for
• not long after texting home and discussing it a dude rolled up looking for his daughters lost pitbull puppy! he was heading to town anyway
• went to moe’s bike shop got lucky they had some armadillo nimbus 700 x 45c tires which the soma wolverine likes also got some fresh tubes + a light o2 raid jacket for when my old showers pass wets out
• staying w/ a dude with a steam shower & hot tub & he’s making steelhead risotto with asparagus tonight!
• next few days might be dry & there are some stretches between camp we will see how that goes

racoons aka trash pandas!

i got attacked twice by trash pandas stealing cookies biting holes in my backpack and setting off the bike alarm lol caught some on video here

I was at a campsite in north oregon it was cold and windy so I set my backpack by my side

my tent is a tipi tent the bottom is open the pack was blocking the wind

I was half asleep I heard a noise I almost got up I didn't notice the pack was gone yet

when I got up in the morning I went to get in the backpack and it was gone

the reason I have a backpack is in case the bike breaks bigtime I can hike with my tent to a bike shop or car rental

anyway I search around in the near dark in the morning I find the pack in the nearby woods

I check to see what is missing wondering why someone left the bag there instead of stealing it

the only thing missing were my cookies my ipad was still in it so I slowly realized it wasn't a person lol - lot of the campsites had homeless people camping I'd happy share my cookies with them but some are afraid to ask lol

so the sneaky bastards I hope they enjoyed those cookeis these cookies have a story too

I was freezing & wet & sore at some town north of there and I took a rest day

at 6pm the lobby put out free cookies

I was hungry from riding a week and I kept going back for more I finally asked them what time the cut off was for cookies they said there isn't one and I said I would make one lol they had shelves of cookies lol

but I saved 6 cookies for the next day reluctantly

then I had 4 during the day and I had to fight hard to not eat 2 and save them for breakfast

so the night before I'd been fantasizing about those 2 cookies I saved and extra twerked at those trash pandas!
