Here is how you could trace: search project for "type".

Since it's a syntax, the following string in syntax.leg is of interest:

type = doc:optional-doc inline_space? "type" space i:identifier inline_space? opt_args:optional-function-call-arguments {

Reading from there: type T is a syntactic sugar for T = Type(....).

I don't have any particular solution in my mind so your starting point is that syntax.leg file.
