HIE not working, getting "Loading..." on hover and autocomplete does not work

I installed the hie wrapper on windows using the powershell script.
Using HIE: Version 0.4.0.1, Git revision 7e0b19721872d1c8e44f49484ac75f6c61412349 (2220 commits) x86_64 ghc-8.4.4
After loading the Haskell code file on hover instead of showing the types it shows Loading....
Also autocomplete is not working.
It appears that HIE is not working at all.
I tried checking for any error in the developer console but there is none.

I have the same issue. Tried on several different computers (some running windows 10, some windows 7)

Does the project compile successfully first/do you get error diagnostics? One current limitation of hie is that it can't provide autocompletion or documentation until it does a successful typecheck first, from there on it is able to cache that result

I am able to build the project with stack just fine. I do not get any error diagnostics at all in VSCode with this plugin, though. I get nothing at all except for the "Loading" popup on mouseover of types and values.

FWIW: I am able to use the HIE backend just fine with Spacemacs, so I know that my build of HIE itself is working fine. I'm just trying to get a solid haskell dev environment set up in VSCode for coworkers who don't use spacemacs.

I am able to build the project using cabal, but with the same result in vscode as stack. I do see it says "using cabal project..." now, but I still only get the "Loading..." popup and nothing else

I also have the same issue in VS Code on Windows 10. If I build version 0.4.0.1 of HIE using Stack, I get the "Loading..." popup when I hover over types in Haskell code.

If I revert to an older version of HIE that I built with Stack several months ago (this commit), then the popups work fine.

I checked the output from Haskell HIE in VS Code, and with both versions the output has no errors. My guess is that the problem has to do with the extension being incompatible somehow with the newest version of HIE?

I compared hie.log files between my working and broken HIE versions, and the only significant difference was how NotDidOpenTextDocument got processed. When I tested the broken version I got the same error as above, whereas the working version resulted in reactor:got CodeActionRequest:RequestMessage.
