Now in its ninth year, Computing Science's Froshweek has matured into one of the most well

What is the Computing Science Student Society?

The Computing Science Student Society is a departmental student society based out of Simon
Fraser University. Operating under the Simon Fraser Student Society, we act to recognize the
academic and recreational demands of Computing Science students, providing them with a
better experience at SFU. We have seats on the School of Computing Science Undergraduate
Program Committee and the Faculty of Applied Science Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. The
society also facilitates recreational activities, such as LAN parties, board game nights and
movie nights, as well as joining the Simon Fraser Student Society and other departmental
student societies for events. On a day-to-day level, the society provides services for
Computing Science students such as a common area, printing, and inexpensive beverages.

Survival Training has been moved an hour later to the 4:30 - 6:30PM timeslot in order to
accomodate more first year schedules. Feel free to stop by at the common room earlier to
chat with other students before we start.

The five day long welcoming activities at Simon Fraser known as FroshWeek have been held
annually by the CSSS for the past nine years. Without the continued support from both its
executive board and members alike, an event as big as this could not of been successful.
Going into its ninth year, the society is responsible for planning, organizing, hosting
and promoting the event. Without the society's support the FroshWeek tradition could not
be enjoyed by the generations to come.

The University graciously provides facilities and space to be used for FroshWeek events.
Without the continued support from the University FroshWeek could not of become success it
is today. Simon Fraser University has supported and encouraged orientation events across
 its campuses and faculties.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences at SFU has always encouraged networking and
interdisciplinary events. FroshWeek is one of our yearly opportunities to work together
with the Engineering Science Student Society towards the same goals. The Faculty's
contributions have made Faculty wide events such as FroshWeek successful.

The School of CS have been huge supporters of the FroshWeek event. Their involvement in
both the planning of the event, as well as providing resources and funding have been
beneficial to the CSSS. Without the School's support over the past several years we would
not of been able to create what is FroshWeek today.

The SFSS has always advocated for increased cooperation and community among the student
body. Knowing the value in the experiences and relationships created in those first weeks
at Simon Fraser, the SFSS has been a huge sponsor of FroshWeek. By aiding in both the
planning and organization of the week, as well as partially financing the event we are
happy the FroshWeek tradition lives on through their generous contributions over the
 years.

Simba has been a FroshWeek sponsor for quite some time now, and we are thankful for their
continued support for such an important event for Undergraduate Computing Science students
at SFU. With Simba's support we have been able to create the tradition that is FroshWeek,
which could not have been done otherwise. We are proud to have Simba Technologies as a
Gold Level sponsor once again this year.

EA is a new sponser to FroshWeek this year and with their support we have been able to
make this year's FroshWeek one of the biggest we've held to date. We are very thankful to
have EA's support in running such an important event for Computing Science students.

As a first time sponsor of FroshWeek we are excited to have Cooler Master on board
sponsoring us this year. The support they've given us will allow this year's FroshWeek to
be better than any one we've hosted before. We are very grateful for their sponsorship of
 FroshWeek this year.

This year is the first year we've had a sponsorship from Microsoft and we are thrilled to
have their support in funding FroshWeek 2012. With their support we have been able to
design some of the best FroshWeek events at SFU for Computing Science students. We really
appreciate their help in making such a successful event happen.

Mobify is an open platform to make any website adaptive to any device: mobile, tablets and
more. Enterprises like Starbucks, Lululemon, Bosch, Ideeli and Threadless use Mobify
products to serve their customers amazing web experiences in every way they choose to
connect. Developers build adaptive web experience by remixing HTML, CSS and JavaScript
with Mobify open-source tools like Mobify.js and Mobify Cloud services.

This is Mobify's first year supporting Frosh Week and we are very grateful for their
contributions in helping make this event such a success.

What is FroshWeek?

FroshWeek is the ultimate introductory experience for Computing Science students at Simon
Fraser University. Organized by the Computing Science Student Society, in partnership with
the School of Computing Science, it is a week of fun-filled activities designed to orient,
entertain and educate new university students with a Computing Science twist.

Held during the first week of the Fall semester at SFU (Sept. 2 - 5), FroshWeek is
organized by students, for students. Incoming students receive: an in-depth introduction
to the facilities available to them as Computing Science students; many entertaining on-
and off-campus challenges and diversions to motivate, amuse, and connect them with other
students; valuable advice from their elders with respect to courses and the university
experience in general; and some free food and tools to make the transition to university
 much smoother.

Beginning in 2004, and now in its tenth year running, Computing Science's Froshweek has
matured into one of the most well received and recognized student-organized events at
Simon Fraser University. It is a memorable and cherished week for participants and
 organizers alike.

What is the Computing Science Student Society?

The Computing Science Student Society is a departmental student society based out of Simon
Fraser University. Operating under the Simon Fraser Student Society, we act to recognize
the academic and recreational demands of Computing Science students, providing them with a
better experience at SFU. We have seats on the School of Computing Science Undergraduate
Program Committee and the Faculty of Applied Science Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
The society also facilitates recreational activities, such as LAN parties, board game
nights and movie nights, as well as joining the Simon Fraser Student Society and other
departmental student societies for events. On a day-to-day level, the society provides
services for Computing Science students such as a common area, printing, and inexpensive
 beverages.

Whether you have registered online or are planning to register in person on this day, come
out for a free BBQ and to meet some of your professors and other CS students for the first
time. Look for the registration booth to get your t-shirt and swag before heading out onto
 the patio for the feast.

RAM'ing Invocation Ceremony:

Location: SFU Burnaby, TBA

You, the few, the proud, the chosen shall be anointed with our token of fellowship as CS
students. This ancient and mystical ceremony must be faced with awe and reverence!

Co-op Luncheon:

Location: SFU Burnaby, IRMACS Theatre

Learn about what Co-op is, why you should apply, and the requirements for entering the
program. Food and refreshments will be provided as you have a chance to talk with the
 computing science co-op advisors.

Laser Tag:

Location: Planet Laser.

Nothing like (unintentionally) blinding perfect strangers to help build a sense of
 community.

Photo Hunt:

Location: Starts at SFU Burnaby, ASB Atrium. Goes downtown, returns to SFU Burnaby.

There are so many strange things in our beautiful city, and now with our help we can show
you even more and take pictures of it too! Perhaps there will also be a secret mission for
you froshees that may put you into the SFU history books. Want to know more? Well, you'll
just have to wait, won't you.

Team Strategy Dinner:

Location: SFU Burnaby, Club Ilia

As you lick your wounds from the field of battle, know that it was but a small rehearsal
in a larger campaign. As you sit amongst your brethren, fill your stomach with food so
that it may prepare you for the events that lay ahead of you. Discuss strategy and seek
wisdom from your leaders. Above all, prepare yourself for a long night of hunting,
cheering and celebration as you will match wits with yourself, your peers and most
dastardly of all: the filthy engineers.

Late Night Lunacy:

Location: SFU Burnaby, TASC 9204.

Learn the joy of all-nighters with all of the fun and none of the work! First, help us to
once again crush the Engineers in our Frosh Slurpee drink-off, dodgeball game, and
tug-of-war. We'll then proceed to keep you up all night with an adrenaline filled race
around campus containing copious quantities of games (both video and non), more random
prize opportunities and other such mischief. Make sure to tell your parents not to wait
up. You'll be... studying... This event goes all night so prepare to be at SFU till the
early hours of the morning on Saturday. Prizes will be given out in the middle of the
night for the points you earned during the week, so make sure to stay in order to
 guarantee yourself something nice.

Interested in sponsoring the CSSS FroshWeek 2014? For more information on how you can
support this great week of events, send an email to

FAQ

What's the difference between FroshWeek and
 SFU Welcome Day?

SFU Welcome Day is a very informative event held in August that teaches you where
stuff on campus is, how to be successful, and prepares you for a solid start at
university. You will meet one upper-year student, called your Orientation Leader (OL)
who may or may not be in Computing Science, and ~15 other students in Applied Science.
It's useful, especially for those who don't know the campus very well. FroshWeek is
just pure, unadulterated FUN, and is for all CS students, regardless of how well you
know the campus. You will meet dozens of wise upper-year students and other first
years in CS. You will learn things the Orientation Leaders aren't allowed to tell you.
You'll compete for awesome prizes, and receive tons of food. You'll make memories that
you'll look back on 20 years down the road. Awesome! FroshWeek is the easiest way to
meet people, and is completely different from the 2 days of information you'll receive
 during SFU Orientation.

Will there be alcohol?

No! We will not be providing you with alcohol.

Is Frosh Week worth it?

Definitely! This is going to be the best week of your undergraduate life. Also, it’s a
great way to instantly make friends and know the ins and outs of campus and school
 life!

Do I need to attend all the events in the schedule as I have classes that conflicts
 with them?

We know that we have lots going on during the first week and although it would be
great to attend all of them we know it is not realistically possible. So we have
marked the events that are essential to go to, i.e. Registration BBQ and Midnight
Madness.. If you have any classes that conflicts with those events contact us using
csss@sfu.ca as early as possible and we'll let you
 know what to do.

What is the best way to get more information about FroshWeek?

The best way to get information is checking the website periodically since we add more
content to it as we get closer to FroshWeek. However if you have a question that
hasn't been answered, send our team an email and we
will get back to you as soon as possible. If it is a general question we will post it
on the website for everybody else as well.

I am unable to make an event. Can events be missed, entered late, or left early?

Yes. We understand that students may not be able to make every event. Although, we
would prefer it if all participants were able to make these events: Registration BBQ,
RAMing Ceremony, PacMacro and Late Night Lunacy as they are essential to the FroshWeek
experience. If you need to leave an event early, just let a Frosh leader know what's
going on. If you need to join an event late, please find out before hand where we will
be, as some of our events will move around to different areas.

I have a lab/tutorial during one of the events.

It isn't mentioned in your schedule, but generally during the first week of classes
there are no tutorials or labs. Make sure you still attend your lecture and be
attentive, ensuring this is the case for your class. However, you will likely be able
 to attend the event.

I am located at the Surrey campus, can I still attend FroshWeek?

Although some of the events are held at the Burnaby campus, FroshWeek is open to any
and all Computing Science Students. Feel free to come join us for any of the events
that you are able to make. Unfortunately some events will be during your classes at
Surrey, other events are held later in the day or in downtown Vancouver. Additionally,
Software Systems and Mechatronics have their own FroshWeek events at the Surrey
 campus.

How much does FroshWeek cost?

It's free!

Do I have to go to every event?

While we do recommend you go to every event, of course you don’t have to. But going to
all the events gives you the full experience of Frosh Week, as well as SFU and the
rest of campus. Plus, let’s be honest, free food AND free stuff is a combination you
don’t want to miss. Especially when there’s the possibility that you meet someone
 awesome just 5 minutes later.

I am a mature student or am already very familiar with campus and services offered.
Do I still need to go?

Yes! Of course! Don't think of FroshWeek as an orientation, but a chance to meet a lot
of the people you will be studying and working with for the next few years and party
it up a little. The point of it all, aside from meeting people, is to have fun!

What if I don't know anyone?

Don’t worry! Everyone is in the same boat! Start with a simple “Hey, my name is” and
you should be fine. If you’re super concerned about not knowing anyone, we’re going to
put you in small groups first so that you can be more comfortable.

Houses

For the first time for Frosh, all four applied science student societies share the
same theme, a mashup of Game of Thrones and Tron, dubbed Game of Tron! How this theme
will fit into each student society's events, is up to them.

Froshees this year will be grouped up into Houses that they can represent in the
various individual and group competitions. Each House represents a different
programming paradigm, and is represented by a particular programming language. For
instance, House Haskell represents the paradigm of functional programming, where House
 C++ represents the object-oriented paradigm.

Where should I go on the first day?

FAQ

What's the difference between Frosh Week and
 SFU Welcome Day?
SFU Welcome Day is a very informative event held in August that teaches you
where stuff on campus is, how to be successful, and prepares you for a solid start at
university. You will meet one upper-year student, called your Orientation Leader (OL)
who may or may not be in Computing Science, and ~15 other students in Applied Science.
It's useful, especially for those who don't know the campus very well. Frosh Week is
just pure, unadulterated FUN, and is for all CS students, regardless of how well you
know the campus. You will meet dozens of wise upper-year students and other first
years in CS. You will learn things the Orientation Leaders aren't allowed to tell you.
You'll compete for awesome prizes, and receive tons of food. You'll make memories that
you'll look back on 20 years down the road. Awesome! Frosh Week is the easiest way to
meet people, and is completely different from the 2 days of information you'll receive
 during SFU Orientation.

Will there be alcohol? No! We will not be providing you with alcohol.

Is Frosh Week worth it? Definitely! This is going to be the best week of
your undergraduate life. Also, it’s a great way to instantly make friends and know the
ins and outs of campus and school life!

Do I need to attend all the events in the schedule as I have classes that conflicts
 with them?
We know that we have lots going on during the first week and although it would
be great to attend all of them we know it is not realistically possible. So we have
marked the events that are essential to go to, i.e. Registration BBQ and Midnight
Madness.. If you have any classes that conflicts with those events contact us using
csss@sfu.ca as early as possible and we'll let you
 know what to do.

What is the best way to get more information about Frosh Week? The best
way to get information is checking the website periodically since we add more content
to it as we get closer to Frosh Week. However if you have a question that hasn't been
answered, send our team an email and we will get back
to you as soon as possible. If it is a general question we will post it on the website
 for everybody else as well.

I am unable to make an event. Can events be missed, entered late, or left early?
Yes. We understand that students may not be able to make every event. Although,
we would prefer it if all participants were able to make these events: Registration
BBQ, RAMing Ceremony, PacMacro and Midnight Madness as they are essential to the Frosh
Week experience. If you need to leave an event early, just let a Frosh leader know
what's going on. If you need to join an event late, please find out before hand where
we will be, as some of our events will move around to different areas.

I have a lab/tutorial during one of the events. It isn't mentioned in
your schedule, but generally during the first week of classes there are no tutorials
or labs. Make sure you still attend your lecture and be attentive, ensuring this is
the case for your class. However, you will likely be able to attend the event.

I am located at the Surrey campus, can I still attend Frosh Week? Yes,
Frosh Week is open to any and all Computing Science Students, but on-campus events are
held at the SFU Burnaby Campus. Feel free to come join us for any of the events that
you are able to make. Unfortunately some events will be during your classes at Surrey,
other events are held later in the day or in downtown Vancouver. Additionally,
 Software Systems
 [Facebook Event Accessible Here
] and Mechatronics have their own
 Frosh Week events
 at the Surrey campus.

How much does Frosh Week cost? It's free!

Do I have to go to every event? While we do recommend you go to every
event, of course you don’t have to. But going to all the events gives you the full
experience of Frosh Week, as well as SFU and the rest of campus. Plus, let’s be
honest, free food AND free stuff is a combination you don’t want to miss. Especially
when there’s the possibility that you meet someone awesome just 5 minutes later.

I am a mature student or am already very familiar with campus and services offered.
Do I still need to go?
Yes! Of course! Don't think of Frosh Week as an orientation, but a chance to
meet a lot of the people you will be studying and working with for the next few years
and party it up a little. The point of it all, aside from meeting people, is to have
 fun!

What if I don't know anyone? Don’t worry! Everyone is in the same boat!
Start with a simple “Hey, my name is” and you should be fine. If you’re super
concerned about not knowing anyone, we’re going to put you in small groups first so
that you can be more comfortable.

Where should I go on the first day? The Atrium of the Applied Science
 Building. We’ll be there waiting!

Where can I get a digital copy of the Survival Guide? Right here! :)

What is Frosh?

Frosh Week is the ultimate introductory experience for
Computing Science students at Simon Fraser University.

 Organized by the
Computing Science Student Society, in partnership with the School of Computing Science, Frosh Week is a week of
fun-filled activities designed to orient, entertain, and educate new university
students with a Computing Science twist

 Held during the
first week of the Fall semester at SFU (Sept. 4-8),
Frosh Week is organized by students, for students. Incoming students receive: an
in-depth introduction to the facilities available to them as Computing Science
students; many entertaining on- and off-campus challenges and diversions to motivate,
amuse, and connect them with other students; valuable advice from their elders with
respect to courses and the university experience in general; and some free food and
tools to make the transition to university much smoother.

To get directions to any SFU Burnaby classes, please feel free to use the SFU Snap app
which has a great in-app map for locating classes. For locations that dont use
classrooms [ie ASB Atrium] just click on the location to bring up a google map with a
 point to where it is.

Registration, Ice-Cream: Whether you have registered online or are planning to
register in person on the day, come out to grab your frosh swag and meet other CS
students for the first time. Look for the registration booth to get yourself all set
up before heading out to have fun with the people you will be stuck with for the next
four (let’s face it, 5+) years. Location:
 SFU Burnaby, ASB Atrium

CS Info Session: Hear straight from the source about topics such as Computing
Science, Co-op, Women in Computing Science (WiCS), the Computing Science Student
Society (the CSSS, us!), and more. Learn about all the opportunities open to you and
what to look forward to in your four (or more!) years at SFU. Stick around until the
end if you don't want to miss the free BBQ! Location: TBD

Welcome BBQ: Following from the CS Info Session, head outside to eat some

Dinner Downtown: As you lick your wounds from the field of battle, know that it
was but a small rehearsal in a larger campaign. As you sit amongst your brethren, fill
your stomach with food so that it may prepare you for the events that lay ahead of
you. Discuss strategy and seek wisdom from your leaders. Above all, prepare yourself

WiCS Welcome Tea: SFU Women in Computing Science (WiCS) invites you to drop in

Well now you can through the power of Pac Macro! Don the Pacman costume, made in-house
